The re-design of the pictograms used at the Kansas City International Airport was inspired by brutalist design. The geometric shapes and strong edges of the icons echo the harshness of brutalism, as well as the heavy appearance of each pictogram.
The 1972 airport is a quintessential brutalist structure, but unfortunately, everything but the building itself has shifted toward a design language that could not be further from its roots. The goal of the new pictogram set is to simplify the icons being used in the airport and re-invent the visual language at KCI.
